A perfect fall weekend.

The infrequent and craft-central posting is indicative of my life right now...busy with a chance of crafting. But a three-day weekend offered a unique chance to get out and do some fun things. So the beau and I got back to my favorite pasttime: exploring DC.

Friday night we hopped on the metro, always an adventure with our pairing. This time we were entertained by a six-pack of adolescents who thought they were the next stomp band, blessing us with their 'talent' all the way to Metro Center. We had just enough time to sneak over the Asia Nine for some sushi and a lemon-sakitini (for me), before catching a movie at E Street Cinema. E Street is great for showing independent, international, and limited-release films. It is also a very welcomed change from the pubescent crowd that mobs every other theater on Friday and Saturday nights. I cashed in some football-watching points and dragged the beau to see Coco Before Chanel. Despite the inhumane angle our heads were in for the duration of reading subtitles from row 1, it was an absolutely beautiful film.
The all-american dinner-and-a-movie date was followed by the requisite stroll around the city on the brisk fall evening before it got too chilly.

Saturday was a rather lackadaisical day, going to the Market in the morning and running into buddy Jon. We shared the idea to go to the Native American Museum Cafe with about 1000 other people (the line for the musuem was out the door, the line for the cafe was literally over 50 people, wrapping down the hallway and around the gift shop). We did a walk-by sighting of the Solar Decathlon on the Mall, before retreating to Galleryplace for Oktoberfest pretzels and beer at Gordon Birsche and a stroll around the Portrait Gallery + American Art Museum.

They had a new Nam June Paik piece about 'the Matrix' up on the third floor that was interesting.
We lounged around my favorite atrium for a bit, until the marble had successfully sucked all of the heat out of my tush and it was time to go back to the hill.

We decided to try a new restaurat that opened up in Eastern Market on 7th called Seventh Hill. They only have pizza for now, but it is oh-so-delicious.

By Sunday it was time to get out of the city. So we packed the car with bags for apples and Taylor sandwiches and headed out to the country. A few traffic jams later, we found ourselves traipsing around Hollin Farms with our delicious Taylor's sandwiches. Eventually we came to discover that they don't have apples at Hollin Farms (doh). Back in the car and down a few more dirt roads we found Heartland Farms where the apples are a-plenty. We refined a technique of me on the beau's shoulders to get those good apples that no one else can reach. This was a marked improvement over the first technique of me climbing the tree, resulting in apples to the face and big toe for the beau.

We filled our bags and bellies with apples, and then headed up the street to Naked Mountain Winery. I even convinced the beau to join me in a wine tasting. Afterwards we got some cheese and crackers and a glass of wine for me, and sat out on their balcony overlooking the vineyard. It was gorgeous.
Now it's Monday and I have a class looming in a few hour. Though I think it's a travesty to have class on a holiday, I suppose that I have been free all weekend - can't be too greedy. Aside from homework and grocery shopping, I managed to complete the 'fall' weekend by making a hearty soup:

4 thin steaks
1 cup of pearl barley
1 cup of black-eyed peas
1 small package of chopped spinach
1/4 cup of fresh parsley leaves
1 large onion
1 shallot
1 package of sliced mushrooms
1 container of beef stock broth

mmm-mmm-mmmmmmmmmm

Happy Fall!
