Most people would dread or at least face with some trepidation a parental visit. But for me it usually means an excuse to exploit the city for all its touristy goodness and sample lots of good food. So I braved our busted Metro to meet the parental unit at Reagan, bringing them back to my place by way of Cava, a great greek mezze restaurant on 8th.
After weeks of waking to the bands practicing at 8am on Friday mornings, I was excited for the holiday weekend performance at the Marine Barracks to be on a Thursday when my parents were in town. We got ourselves dolled up (with just one little wardrobe malfunction that left a quarter-sized hole in my brand new dress) and ventured onto I street. My mom batted her blue eyes at one of the fine Marine boys and presto! we had tickets and were escorted right in to our new seats.
A few torrential downpours later, we enjoyed a few hours of clicking and tapping and marching as those beautiful boys in black tossed their rifles around and walked in perfect precision.
We were also treated to a medley of American tunes
topped off by a few expected but nonetheless heart-attack-inducing cannon fires.
We sampled the brews at Lola's and then called it a night.
Friday was a beautiful Washington day. We started with a delicious coffee and muffin from Peregrine Espresso (my favorite!) before trekking down to SW in search of Artomatic. Discovering that it was closed, we made our way to the National Building Museum and then out to Georgetown to Bangkok Joe's, the dumpling bar down by the Waterfront. The beautiful day faded to rain as we braved through the typical georgetown shopping crowd (stab-in-eyeball) before retreating back to the hill to get ready for a lovely eveing at Marrakesh. We salivated our way to NE and then settled in for the 7-course meal of deliciousness.
As soon as there was mention of a DC visit, my mom was literally dreaming about a return trip to Marrakesh, so she was super excited to quench that thirst.
This was a first-time for the beau. But I had faith in his ability to fall in love with a 7-course meal that involved both meat sticks and a whole chicken. Indeed, he was smitten.
Eventually we rolled our full selves out of the restaurant. Yum.
We walked about 400 miles on Saturday, up to Busboys and Poets, up to Sticky Fingers, down to Artomatic, up to La Tasca, down to the fireworks on the mall, and then home. We were in the home stetch down my alley when we encountered one of my drunken neighbors who decided he was a fire thrower. As a fireball slipped from his liquor-slick hands and flew 3-feet in front of us, we decided that we'd keep the fire extinguisher nearby.
Dropped the parents off and headed out to Ad Mo for an interesting evening with the beau's old college friends. We walked from the car and dodged a guy firing fireworks from his window as he drove up 18th, reminding me why I almost never go out in Adams Morgan. Brilliant.
Sunday I decided that it was time to venture outside of the District, so I brought the parents up to Baltimore to try the Farmer's Market donuts, coffee, and falafal. All delicuous, we swung by the O'Connor-Donegan residence to see Sean and Kelsey and their new pup Doc. We kicked around adorable Fed Hill for a bit, before coming back south and sampling Granville Moore's - a hole in the wall (with actual holes in the walls) on H street. Without having the huge recommendations, I probably wouldn't have stumbled upon this place. But it was AMAZING. Great appetizers, fantastic mussles and hand-cut fries, and an impressive beer list. All were happy until my mom realized her been featured a boy peeing. "I have porn beer!"
Eventually it was time to bid the parental unit farewell and get some schoolwork done!
Happy Birthday, Young William.
